At Chillerton and Rookley Primary School, we value and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of all the children and families.  We provide an enriched curriculum to encompass tolerance, respect and understanding for the differences within our community and the wider world. We aim to ensure that our children are proactive learners and equipped with the skills, attitudes, knowledge and understanding to empower them to achieve and excel in the demands of an ever-changing world.

Throughout our primary curriculum, we promote:

  • High expectations
  • Pro-active learning - building self-confidence, independence, a love of learning
  • Application of learning across the curriculum
  • Meaningful and engaging curriculum experiences
  • Group and individual support to ensure access to all areas of learning
  • Opportunities to investigate, collaborate, challenge and succeed
  • Recognition and celebration of progress and achievements.

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

 The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated (2014).

At Chillerton and Rookley Primary School, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

Each year the children decide upon their class rules. All the children contribute to the discussion of their rights and also the responsibilities to ensure that our School is a safe place to learn. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a school council based on a new model where everyone has a voice. There is a comments box for the children to share ideas which is monitored by the elected school communication team. 

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school days. We have high expectations of behaviour which is reinforced by a behaviour policy that the children understand and respect. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, that everyone has rights but with that come responsibilities and consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.

 Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we promote independent learning within boundaries for pupils to make choices safely.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons and learning about risks during Forest School sessions. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. 

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect forms one of our four values (Challenge, Achieve, Respect and Enjoy). Children learn that their behaviours, and that of adults, have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. 

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Chillerton and Rookley Primary is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse, therefore we place a greater emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly when considering World news, or through the inclusion of stories, songs and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our teaching of Religion, Personal Social and Health issues and personal development (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) reinforce this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship (real and virtual) that are important to different faiths.
